Who’da Thunk?

Well, just to let you know that I haven’t been lazing around on the sofa, eating bonbons. Nope, I’ve been busy. And I know it’s been a while since I’ve made a blog post. Gack! That long ago??

I’m a bit of a Facebook user. You have to be if you plan to let others know about your great products. And I belong to several groups; sewing groups, destash groups, online yard sales, and in particular, a gardening group known as Growing, Better. I mean, I have to do something else besides sew, right?

So it’s here where the story becomes fun. Last year, I made a post, maybe a sort of “look at me” post, which I don’t like doing, but wanted to share with others some ideas. It was showing what I planned to do with my leftover sunflower stalks. This was October, and the seeds had been harvested and set aside for the birds. Chickadees love them!

These are those “babies” still in infancy.

My sunflowers were labeled as Mongolian Giants. Big heads, anywhere from 6″ to 10″ or more across. And they grow incredibly tall; over 6 feet. Which then creates a wonderful stalk about 2″ to 3″ across at the bottom; much like bamboo. I bought them from an Etsy shop called SeedstoCherish, and every seed came up. You can see them here: seedstocherish.etsy.com/listing/1118836999

I didn’t want to burn the stalks in our yearly burn pile and decided to put them to good use. So I posted in my gardening group what I planned to do with them.

Fast forward and a person from that group reached out to me, asking if she could give me a shoutout for my tip because she wanted to use it in her gardening blog. She was making a greenhouse and used her sunflower stalks for the roof. Incredible idea! She made it mostly of found things, except for the stalks, and some shower curtains she bought to create the walls. Another incredible idea! Well, you know me. I just gotta have that attention. LOL

  1. Thank you so much Beth, that was kind! And yes, I can’t wait to see all the ways I can use the stalks for, next season!
